How to run a 50-minute watch
One page. Before, during, after.
Fifty minutes is long enough to get past the warm-up and short enough to be honest about. We found no study showing that 50, or 25, is the best length, whatever you’ve read. It’s a length that works for a lot of people. Here’s the whole method.
Before: two minutes
- Write one sentence. Specific, and about the work: “Draft the pricing page copy”, not “work” or “marketing”. It’s what the card will hand back to you when you drift, so make it something you’d be embarrassed to argue with.
- Check what’s off limits. Social, chat, video, news and shopping all start off limits during a watch; the chips under the length show them. If someone may need you, give chat a budget instead of a ban, in Settings.
- Close what you won’t need. Leave what you will: the reference document, the brief, the music.
- Start. Click the bird, type the sentence, pick 50, Go.
During: ten seconds at a time
Mostly, nothing happens. That’s the point. When you drift into something you ruled out, that window goes dark, the card shows your sentence, and a ring counts ten seconds. One question: is this what I said I’d do?
- No. Press Back to work (or Close tab), or just wait: after ten seconds it steps aside and you’re back.
- Yes, really. Press This is work. It’s let through for the rest of the watch, and the click is logged. Be honest with it: the only person who reads that log is you.
Changing a song is fine: Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music get about 30 seconds in front before they count. Need longer at the end? Press ⌃⌥W during a watch and it offers Add 10 min.
There’s no pause button, on purpose. If something real comes up (a call, a fire, a child), end the watch and start another when you’re back.
After: one minute
- Look at the day. The Today view shows where the time went, your top time sinks, and focus kept: the watch’s time, minus the time spent off task.
- Take the break. Get up. Once you’ve been away from the keyboard and mouse for five minutes, the time away isn’t logged at all (unless a video or a call is keeping the screen awake), so a proper coffee doesn’t count against you.
- Start the next one with a new sentence. Not “continue”. Say what the next fifty minutes are for.
The whole method
One sentence. Fifty minutes. When the window goes dark, decide in ten seconds. Look at the day once. Again.
Why it works
It turns “I’ll focus” into a specific plan, which on its own helps (the intent guide has the research). It makes drifting a decision rather than a reflex. And it gives you one honest number at the end of the day instead of a feeling.
It isn’t magic. Some watches go badly. The Today view will say so, and the next sentence is a fresh start.
