Privacy policy

Draft. This page describes how the app is built today; it is not legal text yet and will be replaced before SqwarkSelf goes on sale.

The app

SqwarkSelf runs on your Mac and keeps its log in one SQLite file there: ~/Library/Application Support/SqwarkSelf/log.sqlite. Your settings sit next to it in settings.json. There is no account and no sync, and nothing it records is sent to Sqwark Industries.

  • It records which app is in front, the title of its window and, in a browser, the site and path, with how long you spent there.
  • Query strings, fragments, ports and credentials are removed from every URL the moment it is read, before anything is stored or sent.
  • For password managers, banking and payment sites, sign-in pages, mail apps and Messages, window titles are never stored and never sent, and the path is reduced to “/”. For private windows (Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc, Firefox) the site is dropped too. Safari doesn’t say which of its windows are private, so a Safari private window is treated like any other.
  • It never reads keystrokes, screen contents or what is on a page.
  • Deleting the folder above deletes everything it has recorded.

Jev (optional)

If you paste your own TypeSafe API key, the app asks TypeSafe’s Jev model about things its rules can’t decide. Each question sends the app name, the window title, the site and path (never the query string) and the focus text you typed. Nothing on the private list above is ever sent. The key is stored in your macOS Keychain and never logged. Those requests go to TypeSafe under your own account with them; without a key, nothing the app records leaves your Mac.

Buying a licence

SqwarkSelf isn’t on sale yet. When it is, checkout is run by Stripe, which collects your email address and payment details. Our licensing server keeps your email address (to send your key again if you lose it), a hash of your key rather than the key itself, and, for each Mac that uses the key, a hashed device id and the Mac’s name. The app will check the key with that server when you paste it, and at most once a week after that. Those checks carry the key and the device id and name, never anything the app has recorded. For rate limits, IP and email addresses are kept only as hashes, and only for the hour or day the limit covers.

This website

This site sets no cookies and runs no analytics or third-party scripts. The fonts are served from this site. It is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which processes standard request data (such as IP addresses) to deliver the pages. Once they are live, the buy button and the lost-key form send you, and the email address you type, straight to the licensing server above.
